Know your domains

If you own one or more domain names make sure that you know which company they are registered with. This might seem obvious but it is only they who should be receiving your money when you renew your domains. I say this because there are scammers out there who will send you a letter of solicitation in the guise of a domain renewal notice. They usually seem to know that you have a domain about to expire, which makes them seem legit, but in reality they are out to con you. If you get a letter about renewal of one of your domains and it isn't from the company you bought your domain from, ignore it. No matter how professional these letters look, don't let them scare you into paying.

I've had a couple of these letters so far from "Registration Services Incorporated" and "Domain Registration of America".

I completely agree - I have 231 domains registered in total, and I get emails or letters almost on a monthly basis telling me that "we can offer you a cheaper renewal deal" - interestingly the prices are usually a lot higher than I paid in the first place, or would pay to renew the domain anyway. The other scam to watch out for is Nominet - they send out "Proforma Invoices" when you let a domain expire - they are usually for around £100 and are something that you definately dont have to pay! I've had several customers suckered into paying them thinking that it was a charge for allowing the domain to expire, where-as in fact they are simply renewing the domain for 10 times the actual cost of renewing it with an alternate registrar.
